When Mark’s story eventually ended following the devastating plane crash, fans were left with one of the show’s most memorable farewells.
The character’s death also gave Grey’s Anatomy a lasting connection to Dane’s legacy: Seattle Grace Mercy West was eventually renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
For many viewers, however, “McSteamy” was only the beginning of the Eric Dane story.
A Career Beyond Grey’s Anatomy
Dane didn’t remain trapped inside the image of the attractive television doctor.
He went on to play Tom Chandler in The Last Ship, taking on the role of a Navy commander dealing with a global catastrophe.
Then came another major transformation.
In HBO’s Euphoria, Dane played Cal Jacobs, a secretive and deeply troubled father whose life was very different from Mark Sloan’s.
The role showed audiences another side of his acting ability.
He was no longer simply the charming television heartthrob.
He was playing complicated characters with serious emotional and psychological struggles.
His film work also included Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and other projects, adding to a career that stretched across several decades.
But in 2025, Dane’s life changed in a way no television script could prepare him for.
