He looked away.
“I remember it, too.”
“Do you? Because I remember every word.”
She looked directly at him.
“You told me I had been useful when you were building your business, but now I was nothing more than a burden.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And then you said something I have never forgotten.”
He waited.
Emily’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“You said, ‘If you walk out that door, don’t ever come back expecting anything from me.’”
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
“I was angry.”
“So was I. But I was pregnant, Daniel. I was frightened, and I had nowhere to go. I still hoped you would stop me.”
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
“I waited until I couldn’t see the mansion anymore. I kept looking back, thinking you might come running after me.”
Daniel’s hands began to shake.
“But you never came.”
