“Because he’s my son,” he said quietly.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was your son when he was born, too.”
Daniel lowered his head.
There was no defense against that truth.
Finally, Noah spoke from his wheelchair.
“Mom?”
Emily turned immediately.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
“Can we let him try?”
She stared at her son.
Noah looked at Daniel, then back at her.
“I don’t know if he’s a good dad. I don’t even know him. But you always told me that people deserve a chance to do the right thing.”
Emily pressed her lips together.
For a moment, she looked as though she might break down.
Then she stepped aside.
“Only because Noah asked.”
Daniel nodded.
He didn’t celebrate. He didn’t make promises he couldn’t guarantee.
He simply walked over to his son and helped him prepare for the journey.
