For years, Daniel would have ended the call and returned to work.
Instead, he smiled.
“Tell them I’ll join by video.”
“Of course, sir. And your flight to New York?”
“Cancel it.”
There was a brief silence.
“Cancel it?”
“Yes. I’ll be staying in Kentucky.”
“But, sir, you have several important engagements next week.”
Daniel watched Emily laugh at something Noah said.
For the first time, he understood that he had spent his life measuring success by how much he could acquire.
Now he measured it by how much love he could give without expecting anything in return.
“Reschedule them,” he said.
Then he ended the call.
He put his phone away and returned to the house.
Inside, Noah looked up.
“Dad, you’re back!”
Daniel smiled.
“I told you I would be.”
And that was the promise he intended to keep.
Not just tonight.
Not just tomorrow.
