Emily looked at it suspiciously.
“What is that?”
“Something I should have given you nine years ago.”
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
It wasn’t a check.
It wasn’t a legal document.
It contained no promises about money or the future.
It was simply an apology.
Daniel had written about the night he sent her away. He had acknowledged the things he had said, the fear he had caused, and the years he had stolen from her and their son.
He didn’t blame his business.
He didn’t blame his brother.
He didn’t ask her to forgive him.
At the end, he had written one sentence.
You deserved to be loved without having to prove that you were worth keeping.
Emily read it twice.
Then she folded the letter and held it against her chest.
“I waited a long time to hear you say something like this.”
