It was an offer for an administrative post in the company, with normal schedule and better salary. It wasn’t a gift without responsibilities. He had duties, probationary period and I was going to work under another manager, not directly for him.
Why?
“Because in eight months you’ve been running this house better than some people in office.
I smiled for the first time.
Was that a compliment?
– Don’t get used to it.
From the corner of the room, Mia immediately frowns her eyebrows, tightens her lips and crosses her arms.
Just like Victor.
He’s looking at her.
Then he did the same face.
Maia burst into laughter.
This time I laughed too.
I accepted the post after checking the contract and the conditions. Not because Victor was a friend of Diego, nor because I felt I owed him something.
I accepted him because it was a good opportunity for me and my daughter.
Diego’s photo never turned behind the book.
Victor put it in a frame on a shelf.
One day I noticed her and asked her:
Why are you holding her there?
He looked at her for a few seconds.
“To remember that people who tell you things you don’t want to hear can be the people you should listen to.
I looked at the photo.
For two years I had thought that the hardest part of Diego’s death was that I would never find out why our life had changed in a single day.
I didn’t get all the answers.
Maybe some of them would never come.
But I found out something about my husband that I wanted Mia to know when she was going to be big enough:
Her father had seen something he thought wrong and had the courage to speak.
And the man that everyone feared had learned too late one of the most expensive lessons of his life:
Sometimes the most dangerous person in a room is not the one who contradicts you, but the one that makes you stop listening to anyone.
