part 2 After a brutal 24-hour hospital shift, I climbed into the wrong black SUV

Most people asked because they wanted a simple answer.

A heroic answer.

Something inspiring.

But Tristan seemed genuinely curious.

I looked down at my coffee.

“My father was sick when I was younger.”

His expression softened.

“He spent a lot of time in hospitals. I remember how nurses treated him.”

I paused.

“They weren’t just doing a job. They made him feel like he mattered.”

Tristan listened carefully.

“I wanted to be that person for someone else.”

A quiet moment passed.

“That’s a good reason.”

I looked at him.

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Why business?”

He leaned back slightly.

Nobody had probably asked him that question in a long time.

Everyone knew what he did.

Few people asked why.

“My father started Bellamy Holdings,” he said. “When I was younger, I thought I wanted to prove I could build something without him.”

“And did you?”

His eyes moved toward the window.
