Part 1 — I disguised myself as a homeless man and entered the restaurant L007

“No, sir,” Mason said. “It declined again.”

Henry frowned.

“That can’t be right.”

“It says declined.”

“I used this card at the pharmacy this morning.”

Mason sighed loudly.

“Do you have another one?”

Henry pulled out his wallet.

His hands shook slightly.

“I have my debit card.”

“Let’s try that.”

Something about the interaction bothered me.

Not Mason’s impatience.

The terminal.

Rosie’s terminals displayed a bright red error notice when a card was declined.

From where I stood, I could see Henry’s screen.

It was green.

Approved.

I stopped moving.

Kyle jerked my arm again.

“Door’s that way.”

I barely heard him.

Henry handed Mason a second card.

Mason ran it.

Again, I saw the screen.

Approved.

Then Mason shook his head.

“That one declined too.”

Henry’s face reddened with embarrassment.

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s fine,” Mason said. “I’ll get Kyle.”

No.

He wasn’t getting Kyle.

He was walking toward the service station.
