He had been protecting the missing money.
“Who took it?”
Nina whispered, “I moved it.”
The room went silent.
“Why?”
“Because he made me.”
“Kyle?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
A sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Nina gasped.
“Frank, I have to go.”
“Nina—”
“Don’t trust the monthly statements.”
“What?”
“They’re fake.”
“Nina, where are you?”
“I’m sorry.”
The line went dead.
Ruiz immediately began tracing what she could through proper channels.
I sat frozen.
Fake statements.
Stolen charity funds.
Card fraud.
Tip skimming.
And someone besides Kyle directing Nina.
Amber whispered, “Plan B.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“The notebook.”
She swallowed.
“Maybe Plan B wasn’t about getting you out of the restaurant.”
My skin prickled.
“What do you think it meant?”
She looked toward the office.
“Maybe it meant making sure that if you found out, you’d blame the wrong person.”
At that moment Detective Ruiz returned from speaking with another officer.
