Part 1 — I disguised myself as a homeless man and entered the restaurant L007

“What did Nina say when you told her?”

“She told me to stay out of it.”

“Why?”

“She said Frank had accountants. Audits. Insurance. She said if something was wrong, he’d find it.”

Ruiz asked, “Did she seem scared?”

Eddie looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

“Of Kyle?”

“I thought so.”

“Now?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Ruiz gestured for me to answer on speaker.

“Hello?”

At first, silence.

Then Nina’s voice.

“Frank.”

My chest tightened.

“Where are you?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Where are you?”

“Don’t ask me that.”

“Nina, the police are here.”

“I know.”

“You knew about Kyle?”

Silence.

“Nina.”

“Not at first.”

“How much did you know?”

“Enough.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her breathing shook.

“Because by the time I understood what he’d done, he’d already used my login.”

Ruiz leaned closer but stayed silent.

“Used it for what?”

“Refunds. Credits. Gift cards. Payroll adjustments.”
