One day, after the course, my teacher said to me:

Not about the secrets.

About the little things.

How he was laughing.

What music he was listening to.

How he chewed the end of his pen when he was learning.

One day I asked her:

Why did you keep all these twenty-two years old?

Margaret looked at my mother’s photo.

“Because your mother entrusted me with her story. But the story didn’t belong to me to tell anyone.

Then he looked at me.

It belonged to you.

That night I finally understood why my teacher had been looking at me for months as if she was trying to remember something.

He wasn’t trying to figure out who I was. He was trying to make sure that, after twenty-two years, he had finally found the boy whose mother had left the truth.
