So he rode there too.
Emma saw him from the window. She texted him: Please go home. I’m not doing this tonight.
He didn’t go home. He called. She blocked his number. So he messaged her from a different account.
I could barely get the words out. “What did you say to her?”
Daniel’s face crumpled like a little boy’s.
“I said if she really wanted me gone, she wouldn’t have to worry about me anymore.”
I stared at him. The whole room seemed to tilt sideways.
“Daniel.”
“I wasn’t going to kill myself.”
“Then what were you doing?”
“I don’t know.” He was crying now. “I was angry. I was just so angry.”
He tore away from Maya’s building far too fast. Emma watched him go from the window.
Ten minutes later, he went through that barrier.
She found out because Daniel still had her listed as his emergency contact. The hospital called her. Before they ever called me.
