“It is,” I replied.
“And you?”
I looked at the kitchen.
“Happier than I ever imagined it could be.”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
Emily came back with tea and placed a cup in front of each.
Then my father said quietly:
“Emily, what I told you years ago was cruel.”
She sat down.
He struggled to continue.
“I judged you without knowing anything about you.”
Emily nodded.
“That’s how it was.”
The honesty of his response caused him to look down.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
Emily was silent for a moment.
Then he asked my mother:
“How much do they owe the house?”
My mother looked at her confused.
“What?”
“The amount needed to stop foreclosure.”
I turned to Emily.
“What are you doing?”
She looked at me.
“The same thing I would expect someone to do for us if we were desperate.”
My father denied with his head.
“No. We didn’t come here waiting for that.”
Emily got up again and walked to the small desk near the room.
He came back with an envelope.
Then he put it on the table.
My mother opened it.
His hands started to shake.
Inside was a copy of a payment confirmation.
The back mortgage amount had already been paid.
My father looked at the paper.
Then Emily.
“I don’t understand.”
Me neither.
Emily slowly breathed.
“The bank contacted you yesterday, right?”
My mother nodded.
“They said someone had paid the back balance, but they couldn’t tell us who.”
Emily looked at me.
“It was me.”

I almost stood up.
“Did you pay off his mortgage?”
He nodded.
“How did you even know what was going on?”
Emily gave me a little nervous smile.
“Your mother called me three weeks ago.”
I turned to my mother.
He started crying.
“I didn’t know what else to do,” he whispered. “I was ashamed to call you.”
So he had called the woman who he had once said that he was not worthy of his son.
Emily had heard her.
And he hadn’t told me anything.
But there was more.
Emily explained that during the previous months she had also paid anonymously part of the cost of my father’s medications.
My father’s face paled.
“The pharmacy said there was some kind of help program.”
