At eight o’clock we moved to the media room.
I had not told anyone about the segment. I had told Megan, because Megan could not be kept from information she was entitled to, but no one else knew.
The special began.
Other houses came first. Beautiful houses. A Victorian restoration in Vermont, a mid-century property in California, a waterfront home in Maine. Each one was the kind of work that deserved the attention it was receiving.
Then the host’s voice changed slightly, the quality of voice that indicates something is being introduced as a finale.
She said: our last property tonight sits high in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Asheville, North Carolina.
The camera came in from above, crossing the snowy valley, and found the house in the dark with the warm light coming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Someone in the room said oh.
Just that. Oh.
The camera went inside. The stone. The beams. The kitchen with the view. The greenhouse. The long dining table. The fireplace.
