You were never the reason I lost my future.
I felt my throat close.
You became my future.
I hugged her so hard that she laughed.
From the other side of the room, I noticed that Brianna was watching us.
He didn’t smile.
But he wasn’t making fun of us either.
Later that night, after arriving home, Mom took off her heels and dropped herself on the couch.
My feet are officially asking for a divorce.
Mike is laughing.
Then Brianna appeared at the top of the stairs.
She had taken off her dress.
She was no longer wearing makeup.
For once, she seemed less like that confident girl who always had some sarcastic comment to make and more a seventeen-year-old scared teenager.
Emma?
Mom looked up.
Brianna slowly went down the stairs.
I have to tell you something.
Mike kept quiet.
Me too.
Brianna swallowed saliva.
“I wasn’t ashamed that you came.
Mom frowned.
“Then why did you say those things?”
“Because everyone kept talking about you.
His voice broke.
“Dad was excited about your dress. Adam kept talking about giving you the night you never had. The teachers said how beautiful it was.
He looked at the ground.
And I got jealous.
Mom said nothing.
“So I wanted to make you feel ridiculous,” Brianna admitted.
Mike seemed disappointed, but Mom raised her hand before she could talk.
“Jealousy happens,” he said softly.
Brianna looked up.
“But jealousy doesn’t give us permission to hurt others.
I know.
Then Brianna put her hand in her pocket.
He took one of the instant photographs that had been taken before the dance.
In it we appeared Mom and me smiling together.
In the back, Brianna had written:
You deserved your prom, too. I’m sorry I tried to make you feel like you didn’t deserve it.
Mom read it twice.
Then he hugged Brianna.
Brianna stood still.
A second later, he returned the hug.
That photograph is still framed in our living room.
Every time Mom walks past her, she smiles.
And sometimes she still jokes that she attended her prom with eighteen years of delay.
But I don’t think I’ll see it that way anymore.
Me neither.
Because some moments don’t come when we expect them to.
Sometimes life makes us wait years for an apology, a dance, a photograph or the opportunity to feel celebrated.
