The following morning, we reported everything to the police.
But Daniel didn’t disappear quietly.
He called seventeen times.
Then came the messages.
“Rebecca, she’s confused.”
“You’re destroying our family.”
“Think about what people will say.”
I didn’t answer.
Two days later, Emily handed me her phone.
“Mom, there’s something else.”
She opened a hidden folder containing screenshots of messages Daniel had sent during the vacation.
One read:
“You promised you’d never tell your mother.”
Another said:
“Nobody will believe you over me.”
I felt sick.
I gave the messages to the investigators.
As the investigation continued, Daniel denied everything. He told relatives that Emily was inventing stories because she was afraid to admit having a teenage boyfriend.
Some family members believed him.
My sister-in-law even called me.
“Rebecca, you’re ruining an innocent man’s life over a teenager’s imagination.”
I hung up.
