At first I didn’t give it much importance. My father, George, was seventy-six and had moved in with us after my husband’s death so we wouldn’t be alone. I loved Emily and used to read stories before bed.
But soon his behavior began to seem strange to me.
Every night, around nine o’clock, my father would stop in the hallway and say quietly:
