“After that, I stopped trusting the mail. But I kept writing. I have every letter since.”
“Why didn’t you come for me?”
“I tried, but your father or the nanny was always around, and I was barred from your school.”
Then I moved away for college and changed phone number twice.
“I kept writing.”
I barely used social media.
So Anna had no idea where I’d gone.
Last month, she happened to see my name in an online alumni newsletter! It mentioned the company I worked for.
“Once I had that,” she said, “finding your address wasn’t too hard.”
I actually laughed.
She happened to see my name.
“So you waited for my birthday.”
“I figured 12 years late was bad enough.”
That made me laugh again.
Then I started crying. She did too.
It was a strange reunion.
But it was ours.
