Anna said she’d gone to Dad the night before my birthday and told him she couldn’t keep lying.
“He refused to let me tell you the truth.”
She paused.
“I told him I wasn’t asking anymore.”
That sounded exactly like the Anna I remembered.
“I thought he’d be angry.”
“So what did he do?”
“He told me if I told you the truth, I’d never see you again. But I said I was telling you, anyway.”
Dad fired her that night.
He told her to leave and never contact me.
By the following morning, he’d removed her from my school’s approved pickup list and stopped taking her calls.
“What did he do?”
Anna’s apartment had belonged to one of Dad’s relatives, and she was told to vacate immediately. Her phone was disconnected because it was under Dad’s contract.
That explained why she’d disappeared so fast.
