My father kept my mother’s full salary for 43 years

Here’s the English translation:

My mother put the key into the lock.

I still remember that sound.

A small click.

That was it.

After more.S. than forty years of imagining all sorts of things about that box, I expected to find money.

Maybe jewelry.

Maybe papers relating to some debt.

Maybe evidence of a life my father had hidden from us.

But when Mom lifted the lid, there were no stacks of banknotes inside.

There were dozens of envelopes, old bankbooks, bank statements, and a thick file.

On the first envelope was written:

“Margareta — 1983.”

On the next:

“Margareta — 1984.”

Then 1985.

And so on, year after year.

Mom took out the file.

The cover was simple:

“For Margaret.”

“What is all this?” I asked.

Dad sat down.

For the first time in my life, I saw him avoid our eyes.

“Your mother’s money.”

I stood frozen.

“What money?”

“All of it.”

My aunt let out a small gasp.
