Rachel grabbed my hand.
“What does that mean?” she asked.
I put the phone on speaker.
The voice continued.
“Before you bought that house, Mark discovered something about the money you used to purchase it.”
I looked at the closing documents sitting on the kitchen counter.
Every payment was documented.
Every transfer had been reviewed.
Everything had been approved.
Or so I thought.
Then the voice delivered the final piece.
“Mark believes part of that money belongs to him.”
I stared at the security footage again.
Mark was standing beside my front door as though he owned the place.
But there was something else.
Something even more disturbing.
The police officer had just pulled another document from the moving truck.
He unfolded it.
Read it.
Then looked directly at Mark.
Mark’s face changed.
And from the way the officer suddenly stepped away from him, I knew this was no longer simply a story about an angry ex-husband entering his former wife’s house.
