My daughter’s last wish was to see the sunrise from the Grand Canyon – Minutes before dawn, a park ranger approached us and said, “Your doctor told me I had to talk to you before the sun came out”

Hailey watched me from the other bed.

“Are you investigating your mysterious donor?”

“I’m trying to figure out who knew about your diagnosis so early.”

She thought for a moment.

“Aunt Rachel?”

“Possibly.”

“Grandma?”

“I would have told her myself.”

Hailey watched me write down another name.

“What if you’re asking yourself the wrong question?”

I looked up.

“What question should I be asking?”

“Not who has that much money,” she said with a shrug. “Who cared enough to keep looking for years?”

My pen stopped.

There weren’t many names left on the page.

Three days later, Germany confirmed that Hailey could travel there for further testing.

Dr. Carter handed me a folder.

“Consent forms, medical records, travel information.”

I glanced at his desk.

“Who booked the apartment?”

“The research coordinator handled almost all the arrangements.”

“Almost?”

He gave me a warning look.

I continued reading.

Then I saw a page titled EMERGENCY AND FUNDING CONTACTS.
