He stood before I had even taken a seat.
“I’m sorry I frightened you.”
“You sent a park ranger after my daughter.”
“I couldn’t reach you by phone.”
“There was no signal.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me why we’re here.”
He looked at Hailey.
“Yesterday afternoon, I received a call from a research team in Germany.”
Germany was already more than I had expected to hear.
But there was much more Dr. Carter hadn’t told me.
“Germany?” Hailey asked.
He nodded.
“How did they even know I existed?”
For half a second, Dr. Carter hesitated.
“Your medical records have been circulating among specialists for some time.”
“Because you sent them?”
“Some of them.”
I noticed the way he said it.
“Some?”
But he was already opening Hailey’s file.
“What matters right now is that this team has responded.”
“Responded how?”
“They’re conducting an early-stage clinical study involving a new approach for patients with your particular disease profile. They’ve reviewed your medical history preliminarily.”
