My daughter’s last wish was to see the sunrise from the Grand Canyon – Minutes before dawn, a park ranger approached us and said, “Your doctor told me I had to talk to you before the sun came out”

One afternoon, Hailey stared at his name on the screen.

“Are you going to answer?” I asked.

“Maybe.”

The phone rang again.

Finally, she picked up.

“Hi, Dad.”

Three months later, a doctor showed us the latest test results.

“It appears that the disease has stopped progressing.”

Hailey stared at him.

“So I’m cured?”

“No.”

“But I’m not going to get worse?”

“For now, the disease is stable. We’re also seeing some slight improvement.”

Hailey grabbed my hand.

I started crying before she did.

Six months later, we returned to the Grand Canyon.

Ethan wasn’t with us. He and Hailey were slowly rebuilding their relationship, one phone call at a time and one awkward visit after another.

Ethan and I would never be together again. Understanding the damage he had caused didn’t erase it.

But that morning, Hailey stood beside me without needing to sit down.
