My daughter’s last wish was to see the sunrise from the Grand Canyon – Minutes before dawn, a park ranger approached us and said, “Your doctor told me I had to talk to you before the sun came out”

“I told myself I was respecting what she wanted. The truth is, I was terrified of disappointing her again.”

“So you stopped being her father?”

He looked down.

“I kept looking.”

“That’s not what I asked you.”

He took a breath.

“Every month I stayed away made it harder to return. Eventually, I was more afraid of facing what I’d done than of losing more time.”

“You weren’t protecting Hailey.”

“No.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

“Yes.”

For a moment, neither of us said anything.

Then he spoke.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“Claire…”

“D-don’t.”

The stutter hit me hard.

He started to speak again, but I raised my hand.

For once, no one had to tell me to slow down.

I breathed until the words came.

“You had every right to look for treatment. You had every right to hope.”

He remained silent.
