“I want to know what he did,” she said.
That left me speechless.
I hated that Ethan could still do this to me. But this was no longer just about my anger.
Hailey deserved to know the truth, too.
There was only one question left.
What had Ethan really been doing all those years?
Years earlier, during our last argument, I had stood in the kitchen while Ethan packed his bags.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Then put the bag down.”
“I can’t live like this, Claire.”
“L-like what?”
He closed the zipper.
“Ethan, d-don’t do this.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you dare say that and walk away.”
But he did.
I was so angry that my stutter swallowed everything else I wanted to say.
He left while I was still struggling to find the words.
And now, years later, his name had made me struggle all over again.
