My 72-year-old mother-in-law smoked every day right in front of my young children

I raised my eyes.

What does that mean?

  • Martha sighs.

It means you drew the wrong conclusion.

I looked at Jack’s hand.

The movement that Martha had learned to make was so resembling a smoker’s gesture that my mind had immediately completed the rest.

Why did he raise his hand to his mouth?

Jack took something out of his pocket.

A tiny harmonica.

I was trying to learn.

I’m out of words.

“My grandfather was playing one,” he said.

Emma was pointing to the three tubes.

And these are the questions.

  • What questions?

Martha’s getting up slowly.

  • About the family.

It all started almost a month before.

At school, Emma had received a project about family history.

He had to interview an older relative.

He asked Martha for help.

The first question was simple:

“What was my father like when he was a kid?”

Martha told them about Mike.
