He looked at Caleb.
“Then last night I saw the photograph of you and Sophie.”
Caleb looked uncomfortable.
Walter continued.
“I read that you gave up your lunch money.”
“I’m not allowed to do that anymore.”
“Good.”
Walter pointed at me.
“Your mother is correct.”
Thank you, Walter.
Finally.
“Your grandmother’s comment was included in the post too,” Walter said gently.
My stomach tightened.
Rachel winced.
Apparently she had included more of the story than I realized.
Walter looked at Caleb.
“And your answer was there.”
Caleb whispered it.
“She knows when someone’s kind to her.”
Walter nodded.
“That sentence kept me awake.”
He looked at Sophie.
“I spent too many years wondering what my daughter understood instead of asking whether I was giving her enough love to understand.”
Linda’s face entered my mind.
Walter continued.
“I had been setting aside money to donate somewhere eventually. Your story told me where.”
