He picked up the old photograph again.
“Do you think Ellie was like Sophie?”
“Maybe.”
“Where is she now?”
I looked at the date.
“I don’t know.”
Officer Reeves returned a minute later.
His expression was serious.
“We found Walter Bennett.”
“Is he okay?”
“He’s fine.”
“Where is he?”
“At Brookfield Memorial Hospital.”
My heart sank.
“Is he sick?”
“No.”
Officer Reeves looked toward Caleb.
“He volunteers there.”
“Then why didn’t he answer?”
“He was helping in the pediatric wing.”
I exhaled.
“Can we talk to him?”
Officer Reeves nodded.
“He actually wants to talk to you.”
Then he looked at Caleb.
“Especially you.”
Caleb swallowed.
“Why?”
Officer Reeves glanced at the photograph.
“I think that’s something he wants to explain himself.”
Two hours later, we walked into Brookfield Memorial Hospital.
And when Walter Bennett saw my son, the first thing the seventy-four-year-old man did…
was start crying.
