One lunchbox contained twenty single-dollar bills and a message:
I am eight. My mom told me what you did. This is from my allowance. Please eat lunch now. —MASON
Another contained crackers, peanut butter, cookies, and a note:
No good deed should require an empty stomach.
Another:
My sister has Down syndrome. Thank you for seeing a little girl instead of a diagnosis.
My throat tightened.
“Where did these come from?”
That mystery didn’t last long.
At 7:10, Jenna came running across the yard in sweatpants.
“What happened?”
Behind her was Rachel.
Her sister.
And Rachel looked guilty.
I pointed at the lunchboxes.
“Do you know anything about this?”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“Oh no.”
“Rachel.”
“I posted the picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one from the party.”
Jenna stared at her.
“You posted it?”
“Only in the Brookfield community group. I didn’t use Caleb’s last name. I just said what he did.”
