HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY SOPHIE!
It was perfect.
Jenna’s sister came.
Two neighbors stopped by.
We brought lemonade.
Linda came with us, although she was unusually quiet.
Sophie spent the first twenty minutes fascinated by a balloon.
Then Caleb handed her the box.
“I got this for you.”
Sophie mostly wanted the wrapping paper.
Caleb helped her tear it.
When Jenna pulled out the red dress, she froze.
“Oh my gosh.”
She looked at me.
I shook my head.
“Not me.”
Caleb beamed.
“I bought it.”
Jenna blinked.
“You did?”
“With my own money.”
I gently added, “We’re going to leave out the details about how he saved it because we’ve already had a serious conversation about that.”
Caleb muttered, “Very serious.”
Jenna looked between us.
Then she understood.
Her eyes filled.
“You didn’t.”
Caleb shrugged.
“It was worth it.”
Jenna crouched and hugged him so tightly his glasses went crooked.
