The room exploded in applause.
Everyone stood up.
Some people were crying.
Others lowered their heads, perhaps remembering those times when they had judged someone too quickly.
And I was just looking at my son.
The same child that people had looked at with pity the day they were born.
The same child whom strangers had photographed on the street without asking permission.
The same boy who once asked me:
“Mom… if it were normal, would people love me?”
That night, when Daniel came down from the stage, he came up to me and whispered to me:
“Mom… now I don’t want to be normal anymore.”
I hugged him with all my might, just like the first time I had him in my arms in motherhood.
And at that moment I understood something I will never forget.
Sometimes the largest force can live inside the smaller body.
And when the world judges people by their appearance, children like Daniel remind us of what true beauty really means.
