Then compare the results.
If hundreds of people are mourning someone but established news sources have reported nothing, that’s a reason to slow down.
The absence of credible confirmation doesn’t automatically prove a post is false, but it does mean you shouldn’t treat the social-media claim as established fact.
## What About the Image Showing a Date of Death?
This is another common trick.
A graphic may show a birth year followed by a death year.
Seeing those numbers can make the post appear authoritative.
But the numbers may simply have been added by whoever created the graphic.
There is no automatic verification system attached to text written on an image.
A photograph saying someone died does not prove that they died.
The same principle applies to logos.
A fake post can include a recognizable-looking news logo.
That doesn’t mean the news organization published it.
When in doubt, go directly to the organization’s website rather than trusting an image circulating online.
## The Danger of Sharing “Just in Case”
Some people share questionable death reports because they aren’t completely certain.
They may think:
“I’ll share it so people can find out.”
