I had to finish my homework.
I couldn’t turn on the TV without permission.
If I made a mistake, I was punished. Sometimes I forced myself to stand still for a long time. Sometimes I grabbed my arm or shoulder abruptly. Sometimes I would scream so close to my face that I could still hear his voice resounding in my ears long after.
But he always made sure that nothing was obvious when my mother came back.
On Sunday night, he even forced me to wear my favorite white shirt.
When Mom walked through the door, Mark was the first to receive her.
“Your daughter is an amazing girl. We have had a great weekend.”
Mom looked at me.
“Is it true, honey?”
I saw Mark behind my mother’s shoulder.
“Yes, Mom.”
That was the first time I looked my mother straight in the eye and lied to her.
