I was still a virgin at 22, and my mother always warned me, “Never be left alone with your grandmother’s husband.” I thought that he just didn’t like Wayne… until the night Grandma left town, Wayne came back drunk, walked into my room, locked the door and said, “Tonight you’re mine.”

Jason was removed from the property and warned him not to return.

My mother arrived about half an hour later.

I was hoping it would break out against Wayne.

Instead, he stared at him for several seconds and said,

“Tonight you did a very good thing and an incredibly stupid thing.

Wayne nodded.

I agree.

Mom looked at me.

What was the stupid thing?

I couldn’t help it.

“Tonight you are mine.”

Mom’s eyes opened wide.

—WAYNE!

He covered his face with one hand.

I KNOW!

For the first time all night, I laughed.

Mom too.

Even Wayne ended up laughing.

That night ended in a very different way than I thought it would end when that bedroom door was locked.

Wayne sat in the kitchen, had coffee and called Grandma to tell her everything.

He promised him he would never drink again.

And he kept that promise.
