I thought we still had time…S. but time was already slipping away. He was still breathing… but I could feel him slowly leaving me.

I wiped my eyes and leaned closer.

“Not for me… for her.”

My breath stopped.

For her?

I looked at him, confused, scared. “Daniel… what do you mean?”

He blinked slowly, like it took everything he had just to stay awake.

Then I remembered something.

Weeks ago, when the doctor called us into a private room. When Daniel asked me to step outside for a moment. When he came out smiling… but his eyes were different.

I never asked what they said.

I was too afraid.

“Daniel…” my voice trembled. “What didn’t you tell me?”

The door suddenly opened. Nurses rushed in, their voices quick and urgent. Hands moved around him, checking, pressing, adjusting machines.

“Sir, stay with us!” one of them said.

I stepped back, frozen, still holding the paper.

“For her…”

The words echoed in my head.

One of the nurses looked at me. “Ma’am, please step outside.”
