I almost threw up on the plane when the obese woman sitting behind me put her barefoot, dirty and stinky straight on my armrest. When I asked him to take it off, he laughed and said, “My feet need air. If you don’t like it, sit down somewhere else.” I’ve never seen such a brazenness. I decided to teach her a lesson and soon after, the whole plane was laughing at her. But when I found out who that woman really was and where she was traveling, I wished I had never done it…

Linda took the baby in her arms.

The girl extended her little hand, touched Linda’s cheek and smiled.

And in that instant I saw an authentic happiness appear on the face of a woman who seemed to have forgotten how joy felt for so many years.

Three months later, Linda sent me a picture.

She was sitting on a park bench, with Rachel and little Emily next to her.

Under the photograph he had written:

“Mary, do you remember our discussion on the plane? Since that day I have started to take better care of myself. Now I go for a walk every day, I know people and I no longer hide from the world. You reminded me that I can still change.”

I replied:

“And you reminded me that sometimes, behind a person we don’t like at first sight, there’s a whole life story we don’t know yet.”
