I adopted my best friend’s son after he abandoned him — years later, the boy invited him to a championship game and gave a speech that made me break down. SIIMO

I didn’t sleep much that night. I lay awake working through fourteen years of birthdays this man had never once acknowledged, replaying that four-word note in my head like it had been written yesterday instead of a lifetime ago.

“Why now?” I finally asked Jonah, sitting up in the dark. “Why would you want him there, after everything?”

“I don’t fully know yet,” Jonah admitted. “I think I need to see him in person before I decide what I actually think about any of this. I need you there too, Dad. I need you in the front row, exactly where you’ve always been for every single game.”

I agreed, mostly because I couldn’t imagine a version of that night where I wasn’t sitting in that gym regardless of who else showed up.

Bradley walked into the gymnasium the next evening in a navy suit that had almost certainly cost more than the truck I’d driven for the past nine years. He moved through the crowd with the easy confidence of a man who’d never once had to apologize for anything in his life, and sat down in the front row.

My row.

“It’s time for him to remember who his real father is,” he said to me, smiling, settling into the seat two down from mine like he’d been attending every single one of Jonah’s games for fourteen years instead of exactly zero.

I didn’t answer him. I didn’t trust a single word I might have said in that moment to come out the way I actually meant it.
