Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

“The account belonged to Mercer, Cole & Lane.”

I knew the firm.

Everyone in our city did.

They represented corporations, wealthy families, and half the developers Daniel’s company worked with.

“Who instructed them?”

“That’s the problem.”

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“The petition listed you as the client.”

I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.

“That’s impossible.”

“There’s more.”

I said nothing.

“It alleged that Daniel had hidden marital assets.”

For a moment, the entire room went silent.

“Hidden what?”

“Assets.”

“How much?”

“The draft referenced approximately $4.8 million.”

I sat down again.

I had spent eleven years married to Daniel.

We had argued about grocery bills, school tuition, vacation costs, retirement accounts.

I knew the numbers Daniel wanted me to know.

Four point eight million dollars was not among them.

“Rebecca, why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because when I asked Daniel’s attorney during discovery, he produced a letter saying the filing had been created by mistake during an unrelated internal review.”
