“Now I know better.”
Behind us, someone shouted.
“Mom!”
I turned.
Emily and Grace were running back across the courtyard.
Daniel followed behind them carrying Grace’s forgotten backpack.
Lucas carried Thomas on his shoulders.
Anna waved from the gate.
Barbara was arguing with Patricia about leftover cupcakes.
Adrian laughed.
My strange, complicated, impossible family.
Not the one I planned.
The one we built.
And perhaps that was the greatest surprise of all.
Daniel once told me Vanessa’s baby would finally give him the family life he wanted.
He was wrong.
The baby did something far stranger.
That child exposed a secret son, uncovered hidden millions, revealed my sister, restored two families’ histories, helped create hundreds of homes, and taught a man obsessed with carrying on his surname that a name is the least important thing a family can pass down.
As for me?
I left my divorce with two daughters, three suitcases, and absolutely no idea what came next.
