Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

“No sibling.”

“Then who?”

She whispered the answer.

And suddenly, every major event of the previous three years rearranged itself one final time.
PART 8 — THE LAST SECRET, THE WEDDING, AND THE LIFE WE NEVER EXPECTED

The final beneficiary of my father’s trust was not a person.

It was a purpose.

Anna brought the letter to my house the next morning.

Adrian made coffee while Emily and Grace sat at the table.

“This feels ominous,” Emily said.

“It’s a Bennett family letter,” I replied. “Ominous is our brand.”

Anna laughed.

Then she unfolded the page.

My father had written it shortly before he passed away.

If both of my daughters eventually find each other, I hope they will understand why I divided the trust the way I did. Half belongs to Claire. Half belongs to Anna. But if they freely choose to combine their interests for a public project, an additional protected parcel of land is to be released.
