In my kitchen.
Grace was making pancakes.
Emily was arguing that pancakes could not legally be classified as dinner.
Adrian looked at me and said, “This is the life I want. The loud kitchen. The impossible schedules. The yellow ceiling. All of it.”
Then he knelt.
Grace screamed.
Emily cried before I did.
I said yes.
But the biggest surprise came three weeks before the wedding.
Daniel asked to meet me alone.
We sat beside the Thames.
He handed me a small box.
Inside was my original wedding ring.
I stared at him.
“I thought you kept this.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because selling it felt wrong.”
I touched the ring.
Eleven years.
Two daughters.
Pain.
Joy.
Failure.
Growth.
A complete life contained inside a small circle.
“What do you want me to do with it?”
“Whatever you want.”
Then Daniel smiled.
“But I have an idea.”
“What?”
“Turn it into something for the girls.”
