Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

I couldn’t speak.

“But that’s not the surprising part.”

“What is?”

“Someone transferred half the Riverside controlling interest into your name yesterday.”

“Who?”

“Charles?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Rebecca paused.

“Lucas.”
PART 6 — THIRTY-TWO MILLION DOLLARS AND ONE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

I called Lucas immediately.

He answered from an airport.

“I figured you’d call.”

“Why did you transfer anything to me?”

“Because it was never mine.”

“Rebecca says you transferred controlling interest.”

“Yes.”

“Lucas, you barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

“That is not a legal standard.”

He laughed.

“You sound like my attorney.”

“Your attorney is probably having a heart @tt/@ck.”

“He almost did.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother’s documents gave me a legitimate claim through Thomas Hale’s estate. But when I saw your father’s agreement, I realized Michael Bennett funded most of the original development.”

“That doesn’t mean you give everything away.”

“Not everything.”
