Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

Another branch.

Another secret.

“Why does Lucas think Daniel is his father?”

“He found letters after Rachel passed away last year.”

I flinched.

“Did he contact Daniel?”

“He contacted Charles.”

Of course he did.

“Charles hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Lucas threatened everything Charles had built.”

“How?”

“Lucas had Rachel’s old photographs and letters. Some proved Daniel had been with Rachel during the possible conception period. Charles arranged testing privately.”

“And confirmed Daniel was his father.”

“Yes.”

My head hurt.

“Then why would Lucas be the father of your baby?”

Vanessa covered her face.

“When I met Lucas, I didn’t know who he was.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Last January.”

The charity dinner.

The hotel.

The impossible timeline.

“It was Lucas in Nathan’s room.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Oh my God.”

“We met through an architecture forum. He was researching Thomas Hale’s work. I thought he was simply a graduate student interested in the Riverside designs.”
