Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

But anger eventually gets tired.

What remained afterward was clarity.

I picked up my handbag.

Daniel glanced toward the condo keys I had left on the table.

“You’re really just walking away?”

“I already did.”

His eyebrows pulled together.

He didn’t understand.

Not yet.

He thought walking away meant surrendering the downtown condo.

The Range Rover.

The dinners with people who spent half the evening talking about property values and the other half talking about people who weren’t in the room.

He thought I was leaving with less.

He had no idea I had spent the previous three months quietly building something better.

The mediator cleared his throat.

“Mr. Whitmore, Mrs. Bennett, unless there are additional questions, the documents will be processed today.”

“Ms. Bennett,” I corrected gently.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

That tiny correction seemed to bother him more than anything else I had said.

Claire Bennett.
