Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

Patricia had inherited it.

I whispered, “Why did your sister have divorce papers prepared in my name?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

The following morning, Rebecca emailed the archived petition.

I opened it at the kitchen table.

Page one.

My name.

Daniel’s name.

Eleven years of marriage reduced to legal paragraphs.

Page three contained the hidden-asset allegation.

Page five changed everything.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

The petition claimed that certain Whitmore-controlled holdings had been funded using proceeds from the sale of Bennett Industrial Design, the company my late father had built.

My father’s company.

The business he sold when I was nineteen.

The money I had been told disappeared after taxes, debts, and a failed investment.

Except according to this filing, it hadn’t disappeared.

Nearly five million dollars of Bennett money had been transferred into Whitmore-controlled entities.

I could barely breathe.

My father and Charles had been business partners briefly.
