Fifteen years after my dad threw me out, I saw him again at my sister’s wedding..

“My parents and I refinanced the remaining balance last month.”

Clare looked at Dad.

“You don’t own this wedding anymore.”

His face collapsed.

Not because of the money.

Because the leash had gone slack.

Clare held up the papers.

“These are copies of the trust amendments Dad asked me to sign six weeks ago.”

My stomach tightened.

Dad looked around the room.

“Private family business.”

“Not anymore.”

Clare’s voice shook.

“You told me the amendments were routine estate planning.”

She looked at the guests.

“They weren’t.”

Richard stood.

“Clare, stop talking.”

David’s father rose from another table.

So did two other men I didn’t recognize.

Richard slowly sat again.

Clare looked at me.

“The documents required me to acknowledge that Evelyn had voluntarily severed all family relationships and waived any future claim connected to the Ulette estate.”

I stared at my father.

He had been trying to erase me legally too.
