It was the first time he had ever said that to his father.
The first time.
And everyone in that car knew it.
Dean’s voice changed.
“Excuse me?”
Caleb held the phone tighter.
“You heard me.”
A long silence followed.
Then Dean laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was angry.
“You’re becoming just like your mother.”
Caleb looked at Mara.
At her swollen hands.
At the coat she wore in eighty-degree heat.
At the fear she had carried alone.
“No,” he said quietly.
“I’m becoming someone who protects her.”
The line went silent.
Then Dean spoke.
“Come home.”
“No.”
“Caleb.”
“No.”
His mother stared at him.
The fear in her eyes was mixed with something else now.
Something she hadn’t felt in years.
Hope.
Dean lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Caleb looked out the windshield.
Maybe he didn’t.
Maybe he was thirteen years old.
Maybe he was scared.
But for the first time…
he was not silent.
Then Dean said the one sentence that changed everything.
“Your mother never told you what happened to the baby before Grace, did she?”
Mara’s face turned completely white.
The call ended.
Caleb slowly looked at her.
“Mom…”
She didn’t answer.
Because whatever Dean had just mentioned…
was a secret she had spent years trying to bury.
