Principal Everett stepped toward the microphone while I stood beneath the bright stage lights, Noah sleeping peacefully against my graduation gown.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The entire auditorium had gone from laughter to confusion.
The same people who had been whispering moments earlier were now staring at the principal, waiting for an explanation.
Everett looked directly at the audience.
Then he looked at me.
“Miss Hayes,” he began, “has not been found guilty of academic misconduct.”
A wave of surprise moved through the room.
“She has been found responsible for exposing it.”
The silence that followed was heavier than any insult I had heard that morning.
