Margaret always came to the butcher shop before anyone else. He lived a quiet and discreet life, and had never bought more than a few small cuts of meat.
But one morning,s everything changed.
He came in and quietly asked Daniel to prepare him forty-five kilos of beef.
He stared at her.
The old woman counted a wad of spent bills with trembling hands as Daniel wrapped the huge order. When he asked her why she needed so much flesh, she gave her a strange answer.
Her son had come to visit her.
There was only one problem.
Daniel knew his son had died eight years ago.
The next morning, Margaret returned.
Forty-five kilos.
And the next day…
Another forty-five kilos.
He refused to give explanations. She didn’t allow anyone to help her load the packages. And every time she left the store, she looked back, as if she were afraid of someone following her.
Soon, the villagers began to murmur.
Some thought he was feeding dozens of stray animals. Others suspected that he was selling the meat in secret.
